The APTA (Asia Pacific Tourism Association) 2023 International Conference was successfully held from July 5 to 8 at the picturesque Shangri-La Hotel in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Co-hosted by Chiang Mai University, the conference brought together 350 delegates from 25 countries and regions to share insights, research findings, and strategies in the field of hospitality and tourism management.

Keynote Speech

The conference began with an insightful keynote speech by Mr. Siripakorn Cheawsamoot, the Deputy Governor for International Marketing at the Tourism Authority of Thailand. His presentation, titled "Tourism Promotion Strategy of Thailand after the COVID-19 Pandemic," addressed the challenges faced by the tourism industry during the pandemic and outlined strategies for the recovery and revitalization of tourism in Thailand.

Presentations

The conference featured a diverse range of presentations, including 135 stand-up presentations, 62 poster presentations, and 19 Thesis-in-progress (TiP) Session presentations. Delegates discussed various aspects of hospitality and tourism management, sharing their research findings and practical insights.

  1. APTA Graduate Panel Session - Re-thinking academic research and graduate education in hospitality and tourism management in the era of Big Data and AI

The panel session, moderated by Prof. Perry Hobson from Breda University of Applied Sciences, Netherlands, addressed the challenges and opportunities brought by Big Data and AI in the field of hospitality and tourism. Panelists included Prof. Kaye Chon from Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Prof. SooCheong Jang from Purdue University, USA, and Prof. Sangwon Park from Kyunghee University, Korea.

2. APTA Panel Session - Empowering Women in multicultural workplaces:

     Strategies for success

This session, moderated by Prof. WooMi Jo from the University of Guelph, Canada, and Prof. Shirely Guevarra from the University of the Philippines, focused on strategies for promoting women's success in multicultural workplaces. The panelists included Mr. Nils-Arne Schoroeder, a Luxury Hospitality Expert from Singapore, and Ms. Prachi Tahkur from World Women Tourism, India.

APJTR Best Paper of the Year 2022

The award went to "Visual attentional attraction and tourist review helpfulness: A new enhancing mechanism with profile pictures" by Hui Li, Chunlin Li, Sai Lang, and Jing-Jing Yang, published in APJTR 27(12).

TiP Session Best Paper

The best paper in the Thesis-in-progress (TiP) Session was awarded to "Assessing the economic vulnerability of conventional farmers versus agritourism farmers in Tanzania: A Farm-efficiency comparison during the Pandemic" by Abrahman Kachenje and Yasuo Ohe from Tokyo University of Agriculture, Japan.

Field Trip

The conference concluded with an enriching field trip on July 8, offering delegates the opportunity to experience the Mae Maeng Elephant Park and Clinic. Attendees gained insights into elephant conservation efforts and enjoyed interactions with these majestic animals.

The APTA 2023 Annual Conference was a resounding success, fostering meaningful discussions, knowledge sharing, and networking opportunities among delegates from around the world. The diverse sessions and presentations reflected the vibrant and evolving landscape of the hospitality and tourism industry.
